Multiple contact options
Some contacts of mine have been angling for an introduction.
Single contact option
One of my contacts would like to meet you.

Level 40-44

If you are looking for someone who has information on Nemesis, you should speak to Maxwell Christopher. He is a high level FBSA agent. Maxwell has access to Invention and Gadget enhancements.

Mister Christopher is a good agent, even if he is a bit gruff.

Indigo is the code name for one half of the most successful team of super spies that our government has. She has dedicated herself to bringing down the Malta Group. She usually works with mutants and can provide Focus and Genetic Alteration Enhancements.

Indigo and her partner Crimson are very different personalities, but they make a deadly team.

Janet Kellum is a brainiac FBSA agent. I have heard that she is high on Countess Crey's hit list. She likes working with science heroes, and she has access to Invention and Genetic Alteration Enhancements.

Janet won't steer you wrong. Just watch your step, because she's determined to go after the countess.

Tina Macintyre works for the Portal Corporation. She has the most current information on the trouble out on Peregrine Island caused by unstable dimensional technology. She can offer Gadget and Relic Enhancements.

The dimensional instabilities on Peregrine Island are getting worse by the day, Character. Be ready for anything.

Angus McQueen is an FBI agent who the Rikti attempted to convert while he was investigating their organization. He has more information on the Rikti that no one can match... or confirm. He also has Relic, Focus, Gadget, Invention, and Genetic Alteration enhancements.

Angus was not unaffected by the Rikti, but he managed to resist a transformation that few have been able to.

Level 45-50

Harvey Maylor is a loudmouth and a sensationalist, but he is on the hot on the trail [sic] of the Carnival of Shadows. He loves to work with heroes, especially ones skilled with magic, and can provide Relic and Focus Enhancements.

I hope you don't mind being on the cover of the Paragon Tattler, Character.

Information

Soap Star

Madeleine Casey isn't a super-powered hero, but she plays one on TV. Madeleine is the face of Live Wire, the feisty electrical blaster on the popular soap opera, The Super Days. Her viewers have a lot of faith in her, and every once in a while she receives a fan letter that requires a truly heroic response. If there's one thing Madeleine hates, it's letting a fan down. She can't hit the streets as Live Wire, but she can call upon one of her many hero friends to save the day. Madeleine spends a lot of time networking, and she's become quite adept at pumping her contacts for information about the nefarious goings-on in Paragon City. She's come to think of the primped and polished media darling as her secret identity; the real Madeleine, she feels, is a wily snoop who truly has the heart of a hero.

To Save a Soul (40-44)

Souvenir

Madeline Casey's pendant

You've kept this ruby pendant as a reminder of your efforts:

To Save a Soul

It all began when Madeleine Casey asked you to check out a Carnival rave. You went to the party and discovered that almost everyone there had died. You were able to save only one woman, and she seemed strangely altered and apathetic.

It seemed clear that bad things were going on at these Carnival parties. Without your knowledge, Madeleine Casey went to such a party, thinking that she would uncover the Carnival's secret. When she returned, she could remember little about her evening. Also, her ruby pendant had been stolen. It was a precious heirloom, and she asked you to retrieve it.

When Madeleine put on the pendant, she began to recover her lost memories. She was horrified to recall that people had died at the party. The name of one victim stuck in her mind: Nathan Crane. She was sure that he was important. You went to Crane's office to investigate, but found a horde of carnies trying to make it off with Crane's files. You drove them off, and learned that Crane had secretly been a Midnight Squad researcher. He had been investigating the Carnival, but the most critical pages of his notes were missing.

If you were to crack Crane's murder, you needed those files. Madeleine Casey sent you to the streets, and you learned that Crane's files were being stored in a warehouse in Brickstown.

You battled your way through some carnies to recover the files, and learned that Crane had become increasingly interested in the Carnival's porcelain masks. He seemed to think they were linked to the Carnival's powers.

You ventured into the heart of a Carnival lair to retrieve a mask for analysis, coming face to face with a strange ring mistress, the Madame of Mystery. After you defeated the carnie who wore the mask, you felt a strange pull toward it. It was almost as if the mask was begging you to pick it up.

You took the mask to Cadao Kestrel, who told you that it contained fragments of human souls. A scrap of the Carnival Mistress' soul was even contained within; it was through this transference that she managed to confer her power upon her minions.

You took the mask to Sister Psyche, who let you communicate with the souls trapped within the masks. Many were shadows of souls, but a few were more assertive. A fragment of the Carnival Mistress' soul probed darkly at your mind. You were also lucky enough to encounter the trapped soul of Nathan Crane. He told you that just before he died, he had learned that the Carnival was interested in an ancient artifact known as the Sicilian Stone.

The soul of Nathan Crane led you to a secret Midnight Squad library, where you recovered some tomes on the Sicilian Stone. Though you had thought the Madame of Mystery was no more, you had to battle her again in order to recover the tomes.

When you took the tomes to Cadao Kestrel for study, he told you a little about the stone's history. It seemed that the stone had once been used to imprison the soul of a duke. The stone had gradually sucked in the man's soul, until there was nothing left to animate his body.

Cadao soon contacted you with an urgent message. He had learned the whereabouts of the Sicilian Stone: it had been in Madeline Casey's possession all along. The Carnival had stolen it from her at the party, and empowered it. When you recovered the stone for Madeleine, it began to slowly ingest her soul. As Madeleine's soul was drawn into the stone, it became the Carnival's to command. The Madame of Mystery was actually the psychic projection of Madeleine's soul! Cadao hatched a plan to recover her soul. At his request, you battled a horde of Devouring Earth creatures to retrieve some rare herbs that only grow on the bodies of the unburied dead.

Cadao prepared a magic draught which would give you the power to tear apart the psychic fabric of the Madame of Mystery, thus breaking the Carnival's hold on Madeleine Casey's soul. You journeyed to a Carnival's lair, where you fought the Madame again. She was far stronger than during your previous encounters, but you prevailed against her nevertheless.

Madeleine is now fully recovered from the near loss of her soul, though she is, naturally, a bit shaken. And perhaps a bit more circumspect.

Check out the Carnival of Shadows party

Briefing

I've got a tip on one of those Carnival of Shadows parties. It's a very exclusive shindig, going on in some warehouse in Brickstown. I'd like you to check it out, Character. The Carnival likes to have a good time, but sometimes that means that their guests wind up hurt.

Mission Acceptance

Why do you always get to have all the fun, Character? If I had my way, I'd get in on the action one of these days.

Unnecessary Solicitation

I need you to get over to that Carnival soiree and see what's happening.

Mission Objective(s)

Like most exclusive parties, there's no sign that tells you this is the place. If you weren't in the know, you'd be out of luck.

  • Investigate Carnival's wild party
    • 6 bodies to find, Save party-goer

You rescued the last party-goer from the Carnival of Shadows.

The party-goer's story
The party-goer you rescued from the Carnival of Shadows told you:

'I guess I feel kind of out of it. You say people died here? Well, maybe I should be upset. But right now I just feel like going to sleep.'

Debriefing

Almost everybody at that party died? Character, how awful! That woman you rescued sounded so apathetic afterward. It's not natural. The Carnival did something to her, I know it! You know, I think I have an idea about how to investigate. But I'd rather not tell you just yet.

Get the pendant back from the Carnival

Briefing

You're going to be mad at me, Character, but I decided to take matters into my own hands. I went to one of the Carnival of Shadows parties last night! I wanted to help you investigate those mysterious deaths that occurred at their last party. Anyway, I'm sorry, but I actually don't remember much about it. I could learn to live with my lost memories, but when I came home, I was also missing my grandmother's ruby pendant. The Carnival must have taken it! Please get my pendant back for me, Character. It's all I have to remember Grams.

Mission Acceptance

Thanks, Character. I'll never forget this.

Unnecessary Solicitation

Have you got my pendant?

Mission Objective(s)

There's an aura of tension in this room, as though a great plan was nearing fruition.

  • Find Madeleine Casey's pendant

You defeated the Carnival's minions and recovered Madeleine Casey's pendant.

Ruby pendant
This large ruby pendant was handed down to Madeleine Casey from her late grandmother. The unusual setting is shaped like a long-fingered golden hand. The fingertips seem to caress the deep crimson stone, in a gesture that is at once haunting and evocative.

Debriefing

Oh, my pendant! Thank you, Character! Let me just slip it on; I promise it'll never leave my neck again.

Forever and ever, you will serve my indomitable will.

Oh. Oh, my! Character, when I put that pendant on, I was overcome. Memories, emotions. Some of them were mine, but most weren't. I could almost glimpse the Carnival's plan! They must have infused my pendant with some of their power!

Go to Nathan Crane's office and find out why the Carnival want him dead

Briefing

The Carnival of Shadows definitely did something to my pendant while it was in their possession. Ever since you returned it to me, I've been recovering more and more of my memories about that party. Character, this is awful, but I think some people died! One of them, I think his name was Nathan Crane. Yes! Yes, I'm sure that's right. I'd really like you to go over to his office and see if you can find out why the Carnival would want him dead.

Mission Acceptance

I'm feeling pretty shaken, Character. I was there, while the Carnival was killing people! And I couldn't do anything about it.

Unnecessary Solicitation

I need to know why the Carnival killed Nathan Crane. Character, I need to!

Mission Objective(s)

The abrupt bleat of a horn makes you jump.

  • Defeat all carnies in office
    • Learn cause of Crane's death

You defeated the Carnival and found an interesting file.

Partial files
From these files, it is apparent that the late Nathan Crane was secretly a Midnight Squad researcher. His last notes seem to have something to do with the Carnival of Shadows; however, the Carnival minions have made off with the most important pages.

Debriefing

So, Nathan Crane was investigating the Carnival, huh? I guess that's why they murdered him. Maybe he was getting close to something. We'll have to keep digging, Character. I've got to find out why he died!

Take to the streets

Briefing

If we can find Nathan Crane's stolen files, maybe we can find out why the Carnival murdered him. I'm sure he must have been on the trail of some big secret. Character, take to the streets at once. One of those Carnival minions knows where those files are. And I aim to find out which one!

Mission Acceptance

I guess I've been a little curt lately. Sorry about that. I really don't know what's gotten into me.

Unnecessary Solicitation

I don't see any files around here, do you?

Mission Objective(s)

  • Interrogate Carnies about files
    • Defeat 45 Carnies

On one of the Carnival minions, you found a note.

Icon clue generic.png
Note
You found this note on one of the Carnival minions you defeated. It reads:

'The researcher's files will be stored in our large Brickstown warehouse. As for the other plan, it is proceeding swiftly.'

Debriefing

Do you need me to hold your hand through everything? You know where the files are. Get moving!

Get Nathan Crane's files from the Carnival of Shadows

Briefing

Character, I really must apologize. I don't know what's gotten into me lately. I guess it's the thought that I was actually at a party while the Carnival was killing people. It's messing with my head. Anyway, I appreciate your work on this Carnival of Shadows problem. Now that you know where they're keeping Nathan Crane's files, we can go in and get them.

Mission Acceptance

Thanks, Character. You've been great through all of this. Just get in, find those files, and get out. They're probably being stored in a desk of file cabinet somewhere.

Unnecessary Solicitation

we need those files, Character. We need to know what the Carnival of Shadows is plotting!

Mission Objective(s)

Ever since you recovered Madeleine Casey's pendant from the Carnival of Shadows, she's been acting more than a little odd. You can only hope it isn't permanent.

  • Find Nathan Crane's files

You found Nathan Crane's stolen files.

Complete files
These bulky files comprise the whole of the late Nathan Crane's research into the Carnival of Shadows. His notes cover many subjects: the Carnival's penchant for parties, their psychic skills, and the mysterious deaths they can cause. From the last few pages, it seems that Crane had become increasingly interested in the porcelain masks worn by the Carnival's henchmen. He believed they might be linked to the Carnival's powers.

Debriefing

Excellent. Nathan Crane's files on the Carnival are certainly comprehensive. I thought we had managed to keep most of this stuff a secret. Ah, well, he won't be talking now. What's the matter, Character? Why are you looking at me like that?

Go to one of the Carnival's bases and recover one of their masks

Briefing

Based on the notes of Nathan Crane, it looks like the Carnival's masks may hide more than just their faces. If they really are linked to the Carnival's powers, we have a unique opportunity to learn more about our foes. I need you to go to one of the Carnival's bases and recover one of their masks.

Mission Acceptance

You see, I'm much more myself now. I tell you, my bad mood was just stress. There's no need to be so concerned.

Unnecessary Solicitation

We need to get our hands on one of the Carnival's masks!

Mission Objective(s)

The door was open, the party music audible from the street. You can't shake the feeling that you were expected.

  • Stop Ring Mistress & her minions

You took a mask from one of the Carnival minions you defeated.

This well-crafted porcelain mask feels light as an eggshell. The painted face upon it wears a sneer that is both repellent and captivating. After you defeated the carnie who wore it, you felt a strange pull toward the mask. It was almost as though it was begging you to pick it up.

Debriefing

Ah, the mask. Isn't it lovely? Can you imagine looking upon this visage while your psyche was torn to shreds?

Take the mask to Cadao Kestrel

Briefing

I've contacted Cadao Kestrel, the voodoo master. I think he may be able to help us unravel the mysteries of that mask you recovered from the Carnival. Would you care to pay him a visit?

Mission Acceptance

I have to admit, I'm reluctant to part with this lovely mask. Ah, well. All in the name of heroism, I suppose.

Take mask to Cadao Kestrel

Unnecessary Solicitation

I really think Cadao Kestrel can tell us about that mask.

Mission Objective(s)

  • Take mask to Cadao Kestrel

Briefing

So, this is the mask Madeleine Casey spoke of. Yes. There definitely is some sort of strange energy within. I will require some time to plumb its depths. While you are waiting, would you please go to Peregrine Island and deal with a problem that has been troubling me? As usual, the Carnival is fighting the Rikti tooth and nail, and their battle in Peregrine Island has become far too dangerous. I need you to put some space between them, so we all can breathe more easily.

End war between groups

Unnecessary Solicitation

Cadao asked you for a personal favor. If I were you, I'd be flattered that he wanted my assistance.

Mission Objective(s)

  • End war between groups

Return to Cadao Kestrel

Unnecessary Solicitation

Cadao ought to have some results for you by now. You should go see what he's learned.

Mission Objective(s)

  • Return to Cadao Kestrel

Debriefing

Character, I must admit that I am deeply shaken. This mask you found contains fragments of human souls! I believe that is the key to the Carnival's strange power. They have mastered the ability to transfer souls, in whole or in part, to physical objects. I believe this mask contains a fragment of the soul of the Carnival's leader. By transferring portions of her soul to the mask, she is able to share her powers with all of her followers.

I would tell you more if I could, but it is beyond my power to communicate with the scraps of soul trapped within the mask. For that, you must see someone wiser than I.

Debriefing

So, the Carnival mistress grants her minions a portion of her power by putting a fragment of her soul into each mask. Interesting, Character, very interesting. I'd like to know more.

Take the mask to Sister Psyche

Briefing

Cadao Kestrel recommended that you take that Carnival mask over to Sister Psyche. Perhaps she can communicate with the souls Cadao sensed trapped inside it.

Mission Acceptance

Sister Psyche's one of the smartest women I know. Even if she is a little prissy.

Unnecessary Solicitation

Sister Psyche may be able to communicate with the scraps of soul inside that mask. At least, that's what Cadao thinks.

Mission Objective(s)

  • Take mask to Sister Psyche

Briefing

There are fragments of a dozen souls imprisoned within this mask! Most are mere shadows of souls, too small to have much substance. Come closer, and I'll let you speak to those souls that are more assertive. There's one in particular who wishes to help you with your quest.

Icon clue generic.png
Soul of the Carnival Mistress
When Sister Psyche allowed you to contact the souls within the mask, you felt the soul of the Carnival's leader probe your mind with deadly psychic fingers. The mask contains only the merest scrap of the Carnival Mistress' soul, but you sense that it is enough to do great harm to an unguarded mind.
Icon clue generic.png
Nathan Crane's soul
From its prison inside the Carnival mask, the soul of Nathan Crane told you:

'The Carnival minions all use the power of the Carnival mistress, and it weakens her. In order to fuel her power, she must drink the souls of other humans. Usually the carnies merely tug at the shadows of souls: the hidden fears, the guilty pleasures, all the subconscious emotions that rarely come to light.

'Occasionally, though, they drain the entire soul from the body. That's what happened to me. I have been stored in this mask along with these scraps of others' souls, until I can be delivered to the Carnival Mistress' psychic table. I thank you for rescuing me from that fate. In return, I will give you a clue to the Carnival's plan.

'Just before I died, I learned that the Carnival was researching an ancient artifact called the Sicilian Stone. If you like, I will guide you to a secret Midnight Squad library where we can find some tomes on the Stone. Perhaps together, we can learn the Carnival's plan.'

Debriefing

So, the Carnival is supping on souls, eh? Sweet, delicious souls.

You know, Character, I really wish you'd quit giving me that look.

Get the tomes from the secret library

Briefing

So, the soul of Nathan Crane believes it can lead you to a secret Midnight Squad library? I guess it's worth a shot. After all, if the Carnival really is interested in this Sicilian Stone, it can't hurt for us to learn more about it. All right, Character, you've got my blessing. Go get your hands on those tomes.

Mission Acceptance

The mask should lead you right to the spot.

Unnecessary Solicitation

I thought you had some books to find.

Mission Objective(s)

Imprisoned within the porcelain mask, the soul of Nathan Crane reaches out to you. You feel a sudden warm wash of nostalgia for this secret library, where Nathan spent many happy hours.

You defeated the Carnival and found some tomes on the Sicilian Stone.

Tomes on the Sicilian Stone
Those heavy volumes chronicle the history of the Sicilian Stone, its uses, and its dangers.

Debriefing

Good work getting those tomes, Character. It sounds like you snagged them right from under the nose of the Carnival of Shadows. We might have to enlist Cadao Kestrel again; maybe his practiced eye can tell us why the Carnival is so interested in this strange Sicilian Stone. You say you faced the Madame of Mystery again? That's odd. I thought she had been defeated for good.

Take tomes to Cadao Kestrel

Briefing

I'd like you to take those tomes you recovered to Cadao Kestrel for study. It seems that he may be able to help us figure out why the Carnival is after this strange Sicilian Stone.

Mission Acceptance

You know, Character, I've been thinking the Carnival isn't so bad after all. After we wrap this one up, what do you say we turn our attention to other matters?

Unnecessary Solicitation

Cadao needs to see those tomes.

Mission Objective(s)

  • Take tomes to Cadao Kestrel

Debriefing

Thank you, my friend. You know, the Sicilian Stone was once used to imprison the soul of a duke who wore the stone upon his breast. The stone gradually sucked in the man's soul, until there was nothing left of him. It's been lost for years, of course, but perhaps the Carnival knows where to find it.

Debriefing

Job well done, Character. I'm sure Cadao will be able to tell us more about the Carnival's motives in short order. You might as well go save some of those pesky citizens you love so much. I'll be here waiting when you get back.

Talk to Cadao Kestrel about his findings

Briefing

Cadao Kestrel just called. He's finished studying those books you found on the Sicilian Stone, and he wants to talk to you about his findings. I think he may have learned why the Carnival of Shadows is after the stone.

Mission Acceptance

Cadao wouldn't say much to me on the phone. When you see him, tell him I thought he was mighty rude.

Talk to Cadao Kestrel

Unnecessary Solicitation

Cadao's waiting on you.

Mission Objective(s)

  • Talk to Cadao Kestrel

Briefing

I have grave news for you, my friend. When you battled the Carnival at that library, they weren't researching the Sicilian Stone. They were simply trying to keep you from learning about it. You see, they already knew where the Stone was!

Do you remember that pendant the Carnival stole from Madeleine Casey? It was the Sicilian Stone! By the time you recovered it, the Carnival had already empowered the stone. When Madeleine Casey put it on, she began to gain access to the Carnival's memories. But none of us realized that the exchange was not one-way. Every time Madeleine Casey remembers something else, a portion of her soul is sucked into the stone. Then it is the Carnival's to command.

If we don't restore her soul quickly, it will forever belong to the Carnival. I know a ritual that may help, but I'll need some rare herbs.

Find the herbs

Unnecessary Solicitation

If Cadao sent you on an errand, I should know about it. What do you mean, you can't say?

Mission Objective(s)

According to Cadao, the herbs he needs only grow on the bones of the unburied dead. A chilling thought.

  • Find the herbs

You got the herb.

Mission Objective(s)

  • Take herb to Cadao Kestrel

Debriefing

Thank you, Character. As Madeleine Casey's soul is drawn into the Sicilian Stone, it comes more and more under the Carnival's command. The Madame of Mystery you have faced three times? She is none other than the psychic projection of Madeleine Casey's soul. In order to restore the soul to its proper owner, you must rip apart the psychic projection. No, not just physically. You must rip it apart on a psychic level. With this herb you have brought me, I will mix a draught that will give you the power to do so. Come back and see me shortly.

Debriefing

You and Cadao can have your little joke, but it's not very nice to leave your own contact out of the loop. I'm your best chance of dealing with the Carnival of Shadows. Why won't you talk to me?

Talk to Cadao Kestrel

Briefing

Cadao Kestrel wants to see you again, and, as usual, he won't tell me what it's about. I don't appreciate all this secrecy, Character.

Mission Acceptance

I don't understand why you and Cadao feel you have to keep me in the dark.

Talk to Cadao Kestrel

Unnecessary Solicitation

I need you to take those tomes over to Cadao.

Mission Objective(s)

  • Talk to Cadao Kestrel

Briefing

Drink this draught, Character. It will grant you the power you need to defeat the Madame of Mystery, Madeleine Casey's psychic self, once and for all. When you have done so, the Carnival's hold on her soul will be broken. I must warn you, by now Madeleine's soul is nearly consumed. That means the Madame will be far, far stronger than during your earlier encounters.

After talking to Cadao, you will receive the Psychic Cleaver temporary power.

It sounds as if the Carnival of Shadows is turning Paragon citizens into puppets for their own amusement. Diabolical. What's even worse is that the citizens have no idea they're being manipulated. They think it's all part of some amazing act! Character, I don't like the sound of this one bit. I'm going to put the word out on the streets about the Carnival. And you better keep an eye on their activities.

Rescue the letter's writer from the Carnival

Briefing

I received this strange letter with my fan mail. Brace yourself, Character, it's pretty sad. It sounds as though the writer has been imprisoned by the Carnival of Shadows! Not only that, he's been forced to do terrible things! We've got to do everything we can to rescue this person from the Carnival. Are you with me?

Mission Acceptance

Thanks for taking this on, Character. It's important to me that I answer every single fan letter with an appropriate response.

Here's the letter. I hope you can find the person who wrote it.

Letter
This letter arrived this morning along with Madeleine's fan mail. It reads:

'I don't know how long I've served the Carnival, or what my life was like before. I only know I was content, until they made me kill another man. Please help me! I must get away before I lose myself entirely!'

Unnecessary Solicitation

If the Carnival is holding someone against his will, you've got to save him!

Mission Objective(s)

In an attempt to lend a festive atmosphere to these drab surroundings, the walls have been hung with cheap paper banners.

  • Rescue Carnival's slaves
    • 3 Carnival slaves to rescue

You rescued the slaves from the Carnival of Shadows.

The slave's story
One of the Carnival's slaves you rescued told you:

'Almost all of the Carnival's minions are under some degree of mind control. I don't know who the great and powerful Carnival Mistress is, but she lives in all our minds. It is her awesome psychic power that the Ring Mistresses wield. If you can find her and stop her, the whole Carnival will fall apart!'

Debriefing

Brr, Character, the Carnival is giving me the shivers lately. Are you saying that every single Carnival member is psychically connected to their leader? All of the mental skills are based on the talents of one woman? This mysterious Carnival Mistress must be incredibly powerful. I hope when the time comes to battle her, we'll be ready.

Stop the Carnival's party before they find the files

Briefing

I just got word that the Carnival of Shadows is throwing one of their wild parties the office of City Councilman Klein. They're hypnotizing everyone inside, but that's only half the problem. Councilman Klein is on the oversight committee for the police department's undercover ops program. He has files that list the names of all PCPD undercover operatives, as well as the groups they're currently investigating. If the Carnival find those files, a lot of good men and women may never make it home to their families. Can you stop the Carnival's party before they find the files? Once you've got the files, take them over to Gordon Stacy. As police captain, he'll be able to keep them secure.

  • Stop the Carnival's party before they find the files

The Carnival's wild bacchanals have a way of getting deadly. I'd be ready for anything if I were you.

Stop Carnival's wild party

Unnecessary Solicitation

I need you to stop the Carnival from tearing Councilman Klein's office apart!

Mission Objective(s)

The annoying bleat of a kazoo blends with a horrified scream.

  • Stop Carnival's wild party
    • find files>br />
    • 4 people to save

You found the files before the Carnival got to them.

Undercover agent dossiers
These dossiers, taken from Councilman Klein's office, list every undercover agent employed by the Paragon City Police Department. The comprehensive files contain each agent's name, photograph, home address, and distinguishing features. A note inside the top folder says, 'I'll expect my payment promptly.'

Take files to Gordon Stacy

Unnecessary Solicitation

Those files are one hot commodity, Character. You've got to get them to Gordon Stacy, pronto.

Mission Objective(s)

  • Take files to Gordon Stacy

Debriefing

It certainly looks as though Councilman Klein deliberately left these files for the Carnival to find. It's heinous, Character. He planned to sell out all those undercover officers. Good work, deputy. I'm going to have him brought in right away.

Debriefing

Councilman Klein's claiming that he didn't help the Carnival deliberately; he says he was the victim of their strange hypnotists. We may never know whether he's telling the truth, but one thing is certain: we'll have to watch each other much more closely from now on. If the Carnival can truly make us act against our wishes, they may be your most challenging enemy yet!

Make sure Alfred is safe from the Carnival of Shadows

Briefing

I just got a call from Alfred van Bortel, a lawyer who I've been friends with for some time. He seemed to think he was in danger! He was too flustered to say much on the phone, but I gathered that it had something to do with that strange Carnival of Shadows. Will you get over there and make sure Alfred is safe?

  • Make sure Alfred is safe from the Carnival of Shadows

For the life of me, I can't imagine why the Carnival would want to harm a middle-aged tax attorney. Can you?

Defeat all carnies in office

Unnecessary Solicitation

We both know that the Carnival can do strange things to their victims. Please, don't let Alfred become one of them!

Mission Objective(s)

The moronic laughter of the Carnival's goons sets your teeth on edge.

  • Defeat all carnies in office
    • Save Alfred van Bortel

You rescued Alfred van Bortel from the Carnival of Shadows, and learned that his client may be in danger.

Alfred van Bortel's story
When you rescued Alfred van Bortel from the Carnival of Shadows, he told you:

'It started last week, when I noticed some unusual charges on the credit card of my client, Adrianna Hollister. Adrianna's a bit of a playgirl, so it wasn't too unusual to see her spend a lot of cash. But these charges! Thousands of dollars funneled directly from Adrianna's credit card to a numbered Swiss bank account. Something wasn't right. I think Adrianna's being blackmailed! But when I started asking questions, these strange clowns came after me!

'The last I heard of Adrianna, she was going to a rave in Brickstown. Please help her, Taosin! She could be in real trouble!'

Stop Ring Mistress & her troupe

Unnecessary Solicitation

It sounds to me as if Adrianna Hollister may be in over her head. If I were you, I'd find her before it's too late.

Mission Objective(s)

A happy-go-lucky melody plays tinnily over the shoddy speakers.

  • Stop Ring Mistress & her troupe
    • 3 performers to save

You defeated Adrianna Hollister.

Debriefing

It sounds like Adrianna Hollister gave her money to the Carnival of Shadows quite willingly. In fact, a lot of young, moneyed singles have been getting into the Carnival's act lately. Perhaps they're being targeted for recruitment? The Carnival does like to lead life on the wild side, and that doesn't come cheap.

Check out the area where the soldiers died

Briefing

A group of Nemesis soldiers were found dead in a Brickstown alley this morning. The weird thing is, the forensic experts say they murdered each other! Nemesis soldiers aren't renowned for their honor, but I've never known them to turn on one another. Will you go check out the area where the soldiers died? Something about this just doesn't feel right.

Mission Acceptance

Watch your back, Character. If those soldiers were killed by some other person, he or she isn't mucking about.

Unnecessary Solicitation

We need to know more about those strange Nemesis deaths.

Mission Objective(s)

A carnie's mad laugh mingles horribly with the racket of an automatic weapon.

'We did the right thing! Those Nemesis soldiers who died? Well, they were harassing some poor civilian woman. Things got out of hand, and she wound up dead! It took a lot of effort, but we managed to hand out some justice. Nemesis is the evil one, not us!'

Debriefing

So, the Carnival forced those soldiers to kill one another? Character, I think that's the worst thing I've ever heard. But it sounds like, in their own twisted way, the carnies thought they were doing the right thing. They were trying to protect their neighborhood from the dangers of Nemesis.

Close down the Carnival's show

Briefing

I've got word that the Carnival is up to their usual tricks over in Peregrine Island. They're manipulating people over there, making them perform for their amusement. Most of the time they only toy with people, but every once in a while, someone winds up hurt. I need you to get over there and close down the Carnival's show.

  • Close down the Carnival's show

You can usually find the Carnival near Bayside Docks or Curry Cove. But I'm sure any neighborhood in the zone could use your assistance.

Unnecessary Solicitation

I'm still hearing reports of the Carnival manipulating citizens in Peregrine Island. Character, this has to stop!

Mission Objective(s)

  • Combat Carnival in Peregrine
    • Defeat 45 Carnies

You discouraged the Carnival from manipulating the citizens of Peregrine Island.

Debriefing

Thanks for taking care of that Carnival problem over in Peregrine Island. As I'm sure you know, the safety of Paragon citizens is of utmost importance to me. But their dignity deserves protection as well.

Find out who is helping the Carnival

Briefing

Ever since the Carnival of Shadows came to town, it seems as though we can't trust anyone. Every day, I hear of another politician or celebrity who's joined forces with the Carnival. Well, it looks like there's another one. Sources tell me that a member of the State Senate is actually working for the Carnival! The trouble is, we don't know which one! That's where you come in. I need you to hit the streets and see if you can dig up some dirt.

Mission Acceptance

You can usually find the Carnival's minions in Peregrine Island. Perhaps they can tell you what's what.

Unnecessary Solicitation

We need to know who is secretly working for the Carnival.

Mission Objective(s)

  • Unmask Carnival collaborator
    • Defeat 45 Carnies

You found a list of names.

Icon clue generic.png
List of names
This list of Carnival collaborators is extensive. It seems that half the governmental bodies in the city have a collaborator sitting in their midst. One of the names is that of Tobias Werner, a state Senator who makes his home in Paragon City.

Debriefing

Whoa, Character, you got all that I asked for and more! I'm a little dismayed by the sheer number of names you found. It seems the Carnival has more allies than I ever realized!

Attend the Carnival's next performance

Briefing

No matter how many times I try to get the word out about the Carnival's evil tricks, some people just won't listen. They're still the most popular show in town! I picked up a flyer about their next performance at the supermarket today; it promises 'A Night to end all Nights.' I don't know about you, but I don't like the sound of that statement. I think you better attend the Carnival's next performance and make sure things don't get too out of hand.

Mission Acceptance

I had a feeling you'd say yes. That's why I already bought you a ticket!

Unnecessary Solicitation

I'm afraid that performance could get out of hand.

Mission Objective(s)

One of the audience members you rescued from the Carnival of Shadows told you:

'It all started out as great fun! They asked for volunteers, hypnotized a few people. I was having a great time! There was this one guy who had been up on stage for hours. They made him quack like a duck, serve tea, and tell us about his first girlfriend. But after a while, his face started to go slack. And then he collapsed. Oh, Character, it's awful, but I think he's dead!'

Icon clue generic.png

This body appears to be in perfect physical condition. There is nothing to explain how this man died.

Debriefing

The surviving audience members are reporting feelings of listlessness and confusion. They're not themselves. I wonder if that has anything to do with the man who wound up dead. The doctors can't find a thing wrong with him. If I had to guess, I'd say the Carnival has been drawing some sort of energy from their audiences. And it was enough to kill one of them.

Stop the battle between the Rikti and the Carnival

Briefing

Listen up, Character. I just heard that the Carnival of Shadows has invaded a Rikti base, and they're planning to massacre every single Rikti inside. Personally, I wouldn't be too sorry to see those two groups annihilate each other. But the base is close to a populated area in Brickstown, and neither of those groups has ever shown much respect for human life. If you can't stop the battle between the Rikti and the Carnival, it may endanger innocent civilians.

Mission Acceptance

You're the best, peaches. While you're over there, see if you can find out what started this little war.

Stop gang leaders and their crews

'Ever since the Rikti arrived, the Carnival of Shadows has fought them. We were there in the first battles. Do you think Earth's heroes could have fought so well on their own? No! The Carnival was there, in their minds, guiding them to victory!'

Debriefing

If that carnie was telling you the truth, the Carnival of Shadows has been around for longer than we realized. It seems they may have actually had a hand in helping humanity win the Rikti War! If that's true, I suppose we should be grateful. But there's still one thing that puzzles me. The Carnival seems to be able to control most ordinary humans. Are the Rikti different in some way? Why can't the Carnival just make them go away?

Rescue Samson Grey from the Carnival

Briefing

Have you hear of Samson Grey, the famous track star? His agent just called me. Samson's gone missing, and the only clue was a floppy harlequin hat. You know what that means! The Carnival has Samson Grey, and I need you to go and rescue him!

Mission Acceptance

Samson's a fine and young man in the prime of his life. I'd hate to see anything happen to him.

Stop the Carnival's thefts

Briefing

The Carnival has come up with a clever way of meeting expenses over in Peregrine Island. They pickpocket the citizens in broad daylight, then erase all memory of the thefts! Let me tell you, that makes it hard for the police to take a statement. I want these brazen thefts stopped, and I think you can do it. Are you willing to lend a hand?

Mission Acceptance

The Carnival's antics are at their worst over in Nelson Borough and Bayside Docks. But the whole zone could use a good clearing out.

Unnecessary Solicitation

I'm still hearing a lot of thefts reported in Peregrine Island.

Mission Objective(s)

  • Combat Carnival in Peregrine
    • Defeat 45 Carnies

You have discouraged the Carnival's thefts in Peregrine Island.

Debriefing

Thanks, Character. You did good work out there. The citizens of Peregrine Island can walk the streets in safety again, and the Carnival is short a few minions.

Briefing

I just got a call from a Morrison Stocks & Bonds. Their office is under attack by those strange Carnival goons, and they're terrorizing everybody inside. I need you do get over to that office and stop the madness!

I didn't want to believe it, but he has been distant ever since he lost a bundle funding my first gallery show. Modern art is so risky these days. The carnies said they would save my life, if I'd agree to join them. They said I had a real talent!'

Debriefing

So, Lester Morrison was planning to murder his wife, just so he could cash in on the increased value of her paintings? And somehow the Carnival found out! I don't like the Carnival much, Character, but today they helped you stop a hideous crime. One thing I don't understand, though: how did they know what Lester Morrison was planning? According to him, he never spoke of it to a single soul. Maybe the Carnival really can read minds!

Save the office workers from the Carnival

Briefing

I just got a call from the Buchman-Blackman office complex over in Founders' Falls. The Carnival of Shadows has invaded, and they're up to more than their usual parlor tricks. They've set up explosives! Somebody's got to get over there and defuse the situation. Are you up for the job, Character? You only have 75 minutes to stop the bombing. One more thing: the Carnival may be using an interconnected network of bombs. So I'd bring a couple of friends if I were you.
