Weapon Customization is a system that was released as part of [[Issue 11]] where players can select the look of drawn weapons for those powersets that use drawn weapons, including [[Ancillary Power Pools]] and [[Patron Power Pools]], but not including regular [[Power Pools]]. Weapon Customization is essentially a costume option that is only available to certain powersets. Changing your weapon model in no way changes the effects of the powers that use them.
A character can have a customized shield ''and'' weapon at the same time.

{{TOCright}}
== Overview ==
[[File:Lt logo 0.png|left]]
{{clrl}}
The '''Paragon Rewards Program''' was introduced to take over from the [[Veteran Rewards Program]]. Instead of granting a specific reward every three months, it allows a player to choose which reward they want out of a tier-restricted "tree" of rewards by spending [[Reward Token]]s.

The Paragon Rewards Program includes [[Paragon Rewards Powers|powers]], [[Paragon Rewards Costumes|costume pieces]], [[Paragon Rewards Base Items|base items]] and other additional [[Paragon Rewards Perks|gameplay perks]]. It also allows [[Premium Player]]s to access to game features otherwise restricted to [[VIP Player|VIP]] subscribers or purchases on the [[Paragon Market]]. Content and features unlocked via Paragon Rewards stay unlocked for that account, regardless of subscription status, except for Reward Level 9 VIP rewards.

== Paragon Rewards Meter ==
Next to the Paragon Rewards there will be a vertical meter (it looks like a thermometer!) with a large number of notches. There will be two types of notches small and large. Small notches simply award an existing Veteran Reward badge, while Large notches symbolize unlocking a new set of permissions and a Veteran badge. These badges are given out in the order in which they were intended to be distributed originally plus 1 additional new badge at the bottom. Each time the player acquires a Paragon Reward Token, the user's Reward Meter will move up a single notch.

The player can mouse over each notch to see which badges and permissions will be unlocked when they achieve that level of notches. A small arrow will appear and point to the notch and coming from the arrow will be the tool tip with this information. These arrows will snap to the notches on the meter. Additionally, we will be updating the meter along the right hand side of this interface to represent Paragon Reward Tokens earned versus spent, earned will be shown by the yellow meter and will drive which permissions and badges are earned prior to Tier 9, the red will indicate how many tokens have been spent prior to Tier 9.

== Converting from Veteran Rewards Program ==
{{#dpl:title=Reward Token|include=#Converting from Veteran Rewards Program|allowcachedresults=true}}
== Rewards Levels ==
Levels are composed of one to seven reward slots, which include previous Veteran Rewards Program items and new items. It also includes a set of VIP rewards at that are restricted to VIP subscribers who have earned Reward Level 9. Players can choose rewards in any order they wish within a Reward Level. In order to advance to the next level of rewards, a player's current Reward Level must be completely slotted.

In order to get the Tier Bonus, a player needs only ''own'' that many Reward Tokens. The tokens do not have to be used in order to count for a Tier Bonus. For example, simply by earning eight Reward Tokens, a player will unlock the Tier 4 Bonus rewards, even if only one of those tokens has been slotted into a reward.
== Overview ==
[[File:Community_veteranrewards.jpg|left|350px]]
{{clrl}}
The '''Veteran Rewards Program''' was a system released in [[Issue 8]] that rewarded players for every three months that their account was active. Veteran Rewards were for "''time played'', not ''time paid''" - a player was not rewarded until ''after'' the required time span elapsed. For instance, a player would not get the [[Trustworthy Badge]] and related rewards until ''after'' three months passed. The time did not have to be continuous. If a player played for three months, took a break for a month, then played another three months, they would gain the six month badge.

==City of Heroes Freedom==
With [[City of Heroes Freedom]], they ended the Veteran Rewards Program. Introduced to replace it was the '''[[Paragon Rewards Program]]'''. Players who have Veteran Rewards are grandfathered into the Paragon Rewards Program. These players may have some or all pre-chosen for them, to make sure no player loses access to something they already have access to under the Veteran Rewards Program.
Oh... I could really use a friend like you right now. My jerk of a boyfriend, [[Neuron|Stephen]], is all but ignoring me lately... I should dump him, I deserve better, don't you think? I mean, I'm cute, and pretty, and I could totally get any guy I wanted, right? The only time he even talks to me is when he wants me to do some work. Pffft, what do I look like to him? An employee? I'm his girlfriend! He's cheating on me, huh? I know he is, nobody works that many hours... Hmph, well, I'll show him just what he threw away! But enough about that insensitive jerk, right now I need to just get out and dance so I can forget about him. Hey, you should come dance with me!
'''VIP at Studio 55'''

Being friends with Bobcat has its perks, one of which is being on the VIP list at Studio 55. You never have to wait in line thanks to you and Bobcat being:

'''Best Friends Forever '''

You first met Bobcat at Studio 55, lounging on a couch. She'd mentioned how upset she was at [[Neuron]] for making her go and do stuff, like she was some sort of employee. She said she'd introduce you to Neuron if you helped her out with what he'd asked her to do. The task at hand was the apprehension of a [[Syndicate]] psychic named Jon Shen. You questioned the Syndicate about his whereabouts, and after being duped into taking out one of his rivals, you located the man and brought him in.

Bobcat continued to voice her opinion about how little Neuron, her on-again-off-again boyfriend, respected her. She vowed to prove to him that she was worthy of nothing but respect. After deciding that Neuron was really interested in Jon Shen's wealth, Bobcat suggested robbing the Imperial Bank of Praetoria. You went along for the ride, after all, it was her idea and who are you to argue with the girlfriend of a Praetor?

The bank robbery went splendidly, Bobcat's presentation of the cash to Neuron did not. Flustered, the poor thing pouted on her couch and asked you to apprehend another psychic since that seemed like the only thing Neuron was interested in. You tracked down another Syndicate boss by the name of Melody Graves and captured her, along with the bizarrely dressed woman in red she was having an arguement with. Both women were apparently strong psychics.

Neuron's reaction to this latest catch was a little more positive, thus giving Bobcat a little more confidence in herself. Realizing that Bobcat just wanted to be useful, Neuron instructed her to use her excellent hunting prowess to track down an elusive telepath by the name of [[Simon Omega|Simon]]. You and Bobcat tracked the man down in the slums of western [[Neutropolis]], and after a tough battle apprehended him. With Neuron pleasantly surprised, Bobcat took him back and proclaimed that you two would always be best friends forever.

==== {{UL|Part One: You Scratch My Back...}} ====

Ugh... I can't stop thinking about him... {{Character}}, what I really need is to go hunting, work out some of this pent up aggression! Unless you can think of a ''better'' way...

''Bobcat sits up and stretches her arms way over her head and yawns then lies back down. ''

No, no, I'll go hunting later...

''Suddenly she seems perturbed about something and then sighs and looks at you. ''

Dangit! He wanted me to go hunting for him, and now that's what I wanted to do, but if I do it then it'll be doing what he wants... Ahhh! I hate him so much...

Wait, what if you went hunting for me instead? Then he would be happy with me and I wouldn't be doing what he wanted. I'll tell you what, {{Character}}. If you scratch my back, then I'll scratch yours. You want to be introduced to ''Jerkface'', then I'll make sure it happens, but first you gotta help me.

{{green|Help Bobcat}}

Really!?

''Bobcat leaps up from the couch and gives you a hug. ''

You're the best! So here's what needs getting done. The Syndicate has been using their money and power to move a lot of illegal material, or something, around the city. They recently splintered and now the survivors are scattering like mice, trying to take as much wealth and power as they can with them. Professor ''Insensitive'' says that he wants me to hunt down one of their leaders. He's a psychic by the name of Shen. Apparently he carries around a sword. I know, cute, huh?

''Bobcat giggles and extends her claws.''

I have to admit, it might have been fun, but no, I'm not going to cater to [[Neuron]] and his ideas that he can boss me around. I'm his girlfriend, I get to boss him around!

You got him! Oh, I knew you could do it my big handsome man!

I'll make sure [[Neuron]] gets his little play thing and then maybe fish for a kiss before he goes back to ''work''. Ugh, did you know I can't even get him to come here to Studio 55? He says it's too boring, all the sitting around and wasting time watching people. Pffft, he has no idea what he's missing.
Shen's on his way to Captain ''Workaholic's'' lab. He told me that he was very ''proud'' of my work, blah, blah, blah...

''Bobcat's ears press down and she fumes. ''

Proud!? Are you kidding me?! Does he think I'm a little kitten!?

''Bobcat relaxes and smirks, reflecting on her words. ''

Well, I ''am'' cute, aren't I? I'm going to prove to [[Neuron]] that I don't need him to be ''proud'' of me. I want to show him that I don't need him. Why shouldn't I be a Praetor... like [[Dominatrix|Domi]]? I could be ;;The Praetor of Cuteness;;! Hey, that's not a bad idea. I mean, I'm really good at it anyway, why not get rewarded for it? I mean, more so than normal.

Listen, you helped scratch my back, so now I'm gonna scratch yours. What can we do to show Neuron that I'm my own kitty?

{{green|Ask what Neuron wanted with Shen}}

Shen? Oh, he's got a bunch of money or something...

Wait! Is that it? Is that what Neuron wants? Money? If I have a lot of money maybe he'll want me too!

''Bobcat gives you a mischievous look. ''

Are you suggesting we rob the Imperial Bank of Praetoria? That. Is. So. Hot! Oh! I have the perfect outfit!

That was so much fun! Now that we have all this money, what should we do with it?

Oh yeah, I was gonna try and get Neuron's attention with it. Give me a second, I need to call him with the good news.

==== {{UL|Part Three: Hunter/Huntress}} ====

''Bobcat looks annoyed after her phone call to Neuron. Her ears are flattened against her head, arms folded, nose crinkled, eyes scrunched, and mouth pressed into a sour looking frown. When she sees you an ear perks up, but she keeps the sour look, obviously trying to get some empathy out of you. ''

So, [[Neuron]] is being so unfair about this. He even called me ''dumb''! Can you believe that?! Do you think I'm dumb?

He said I should give the money back and he'd pull some strings to make sure nothing bad would happen to me. Pffft! I don't need ''him'' to help ''me''...

So, he did tell me that he wanted Shen because he was psychic, not rich. So that gave me an idea!

{{green|Kidnap a Psychic?}}

''Bobcat's demeanor completely changes as you mention kidnapping a psychic. Her eyes widen with her smile and her tail flits to and fro. ''

You read my mind! Are you psychic, {{Character}}? Because if you are I think I'd kidnap you and keep you all to myself. Ha ha! It's so much fun teasing you.

Once we get a psychic then Neuron will ''have'' to realize that he's making a big mistake treating me the way he does. Now, I know what you're thinking, but we can't just go and kidnap a [[Seers|Seer]]. Neuron wants someone without all that metal junk in their head.
I think we should get another Syndicate guy. Neuron's always needing spares.
I don't get it. I bring him gifts and he just gets this look like I am the dumbest person in the world, and then he ''says'' it! You don't think I'm the dumbest person in the world, do you?

Neuron told me that it was obvious I was ''trying'' to be helpful, but I wasn't doing what he needed. He told me that he's looking for a powerful psychic, some guy by the name of Simon. At first I was excited to get another chance, but now I don't know... I don't think he'll care, even if I brought him [[Mother Mayhem|Praetor Tilman]].

I bet I could find him. I mean, heck, I haven't even tried yet, but I'm the best when it comes to stalking prey. We'll go find Simon and then Neuron will have to treat me nice. If he doesn't, well, he'll start finding his research assistants left as presents outside his door.
__NOTOC__
== Overview ==
The '''Strike Pack''', also referred to as '''Issue 19.5''', released on February 1, 2011. It included the [[Weekly Strike Target]] plus the Rare and Very Rare [[Alpha Slot]] boosts.

== Weekly Strike Target ==
The [[Weekly Strike Target]] is a cooperative [[Task Force]] or a set of [[Task Force]]/[[Strike Force]] that awards extra [[Special Salvage#Reward Merit|Reward Merits]]. For qualifying characters, bonus [[experience]] or a [[Notice of the Well Component|Notice of the Well]] (required to craft Rare and Very Rare Alpha Slot boosts) may also be awarded.

Completing the Weekly Strike Target for merits (and bonus experience) does not require [[Going Rogue]], but the Notice of the Well extra reward does.

=== Badges ===
Completing a strike target ''after'' the first of the week awards progress to a new set of [[Accomplishment Badges]]. Completing the first strike target per week does ''not'' count toward these badges. However, group makeup does not need to be different; eight characters can take on a strike target twice in a row, and all eight characters would get the reward from the first and the badge progress from the second. Completions are cumulative, so subsequent strike target completions '''''do not''''' need to be completed within the same week.
[[File:Issue19banner.jpg|left|350px]]
{{clrl}}
'''[[Issues|Issue]] 19''', ''Alpha Strike!'', was a major revision to City of Heroes and City of Villains. The title references the Alpha Strike [[Task Force]], which is one of the ways [[Level]] 50 characters can make themselves more powerful with the [[Incarnate System]].

This article summarizes some of the major features in Issue 19. For more complete details, see the [[Patch Notes/2010-11-30|release date's patch notes]].

*[[Closed Beta]] testing on the [[Servers|Going Rogue Beta Server]] and the [[Servers|European Test Server]] for Issue 19 was scheduled to start on the week of October 11, 2010; however, the server was not available to players until Monday, October 18, 2010.
*On Thursday, November 11, 2010, testing was opened up for Issue 19 [[Open Beta]], though, again, server problems kept the open waves from full access until the following Monday.
*At some point in mid-November, the U.S. Test Server became Issue 19 active without any official announcement as such.
*Issue 19 was released to the [[servers|Live Servers]] on November 30, 2010.

==Badges==
:''Main Article:'' [[Issue 19 Badges]]
*New [[Hazard Zone]] [[Exploration Badges]] and [[Accolades]].
*[[Praetoria]] was opened up to [[Primal Earth]] characters, allowing them to obtain Praetorian badges.
*Three new badges for completing [[#Praetorian Zone Events|Praetorian Zone Events]]
*Two new badges for completing the [[#New Incarnate Task Forces|Incarnate Task Forces]]

==City Zones==
[[File:PTA-MonorailSelect.jpg|thumb|right|250px|Updated Monorail Menu showing all available zones in Paragon City.]]
* '''Merged Monorails, Ferries, and Black Helicopters''': The Transit Authorities in Paragon City and the Rogue Isles have made major improvements to the [[Paragon Transit Authority|monorail]], [[Ferry|ferry system]], the [[Black Helicopter Line|Black Helicopters]] by merging their respective routes.
**All monorails can now travel to every monorail station on the [[Green Line|Green]] and [[Yellow Line]] (the two [[Steel Canyon]] and [[Skyway City]] stations differentiated with a North v. South designation)
**All [[Ferry#Villain Ferry Locations|ferries]] can now travel to every ferry station in the [[Rogue Isles]].
**Likewise, the Black Helicopters are now one line.
**Also, the Smuggler's Cargo Ship now shows a full selection when traveling between [[Talos Island]], [[Independence Port]], and [[Striga Isle]].
**Note that the ferry between Talos and Peregrine Island is still self-contained 'warp' gate. The Smuggler's Cargo Ship is a separate entity from a ferry.
**[[Train Mission]]s will appear at the top of the list of zones with a star.
**All these zone selector windows from these transports have had their GUI upgraded. Zones show their level (or the level of the neighborhood of the stop). Zones in which the character has missions will have an orange dot next to their name.
* '''Hospitals In All Zones''': Hospital gurneys in all [[Trial]] and [[Hazard Zone|Hazard]] zones. And a nurse or medic selling [[inspiration]]s in all hospitals.
* For those who have purchased [[Going Rogue]]:
** '''[[Primal Earth]] Characters Can Enter Praetoria''': Non-[[Praetorian (Alignment)|Praetorians]] can journey to [[Praetoria]]<ref name="grreqd" /> through [[Pocket D]]. The manhole that Praetorians had been using is now a portal mounted on a wall (behind the hero-side big portal ramp). In Pocket-D, enable "Lounge" on the mini-map drop down menu for a marker.
***[[Primal Earth|Primals]] can not initiate any missions from any contacts in Praetoria. They can, however, team and be [[Sidekick|Super Side-Kicked]] to a Praetorian doing missions there.
***[[Primal Earth|Primals]] can initiate and participate in [[Issue_19#Praetoria_Zone_Events|Praetorian Events]].
** '''Praetorian Mission Difficulty Slider''': [[Praetoria]] gets [[notoriety]] adjuster contacts.

==Costumes==
Issue 19 includes two free auras for all City of Heroes players. These auras are customizable.
* '''Fireflies''': Your character can be surrounded by glowing, tintable fireflies.
* '''Snow''': Celebrate winter and be showered by snow.

==Incarnate System==
*'''Overview''': The long-awaited [[Alpha Slot]]<ref name="grreqd" />, the first part of the new [[Incarnate System|Incarnate system]]<ref name="grreqd" /> that gives high-level characters access to new powers and challenges is unveiled in [[Issue 19]] .

*'''Unlocking the Alpha Slot''': Unlocking the Alpha Slot is no easy task. Players must first learn what it means to exceed the definition of [[Hero (Alignment)|Hero]] or [[Villain (Alignment)|Villain]] to become an [[Incarnate]]. [[Mender Ramiel]] in [[Ouroboros]] guides players on this journey. Learn the Secret of Mender Ramiel and your involvement in his appearance from the future. Uncover what makes Player Characters different from the [[Incarnate]]s, [[Statesman]] and [[Lord Recluse]].

*Unlocking the Alpha Slot grants that character another (third) build. See [[Multiple Builds]].

*[[Going Rogue]] expansion required to participate in the [[Incarnate System]].

==Missions and Story Content==
===New Incarnate Task Forces===
Challenges already await new [[Incarnate System|Incarnates]]. The [[Praetoria]]ns have begun their invasion of [[Primal Earth]]. Protecting [[Paragon City]] and the [[Rogue Isles]] from such overwhelming forces requires the greatest Heroes and Villains to work together. Two familiar faces will help in stopping the invasion: [[Apex]] and [[Tin Mage]].
*[[Apex Task Force]]<ref name="grreqd" />: [[Apex]] has joined the [[Vanguard]], and he helps organize your team of [[Incarnate]]s to stop the Praetorian initial assault. Face off against the [[Anti-Matter's_Clockwork|Anti-Matter Clockwork]], [[Imperial_Defense_Force#War_Walker|War Walkers]], and the Arch-Villain [[Battle Maiden]] before they can destroy Paragon City. If you succeed in this battle, the war is yet to be won.
*[[Tin Mage Mark II Task Force]]<ref name="grreqd" />: Help [[Tin Mage Mark II]] (reconstructed from the schematics of the [[Omega Team]]'s [[Tin Mage]] which he left behind) coordinate an assault into [[Praetoria]] to stop the Praetorian invasion. Your team strikes into the very heart of [[Nova Praetoria]] to confront [[Neuron]], [[Bobcat]], and a Praetorian army.
*Characters joining these Task Forces must have the Alpha Slot unlocked.
*Characters joining these Task Forces without an Alpha Boost slotted into the Alpha Slot will be at a -4 Level penalty debuff.
*[[Going Rogue]] expansion required for these new Task Forces.

*The [[Calvin Scott Task Force]] is back as a [[flashback]] arc. It exists in the 30-34 range in the Flashback Crystal as ''A Mind in Danger''. It gives 8 Merits. And you get the Souvenir, Soul Orb, when completed.

===New Arcs===
* Two new level 20-29 arcs that take place in Paragon City or the Rogue Isles. There is alternate text for those originally from [[Praetoria]].
*# A Hero arc (''Bad People, Good Intentions'') investigating the medical transporters and why they aren't handed out to civilians. See [[Roy Cooling]] located outside of [[Vault Reserve]] on [[Talos Island]]. This arc expands on the new game lore of an imminent Praetorian invasion.
*# A Villain arc (''Old Friends, New Enemies, and New Opportunities'') that has to do with finding out what exactly the Leviathan is and what its power source is. [[Vincent Ross]] stands on the beach below the Hospital in [[Sharkhead Isle]]. This arc expands on the new game lore of foreshadowing [[Incarnate]] content.

===More Tip and Morality Missions===
*There are many new [[Tip]]s for [[Rogue]]s and [[Vigilante]]s (while [[Tourist]]s in the opposing zone) including several new morality missions.
*Additional [[Morality Mission]]s have been created for the 40-50 level range.
*[[Going Rogue]] expansion required for these new missions.

===Praetorian Zone Events===
*Live events in Praetoria in which your [[Resistance (Alignment)|Resistance]] or [[Loyalist (Alignment)|Loyalist]] character can participate<ref name="grreqd" /> and choose which side to help:
** '''The Protest''' ([[Nova Praetoria]]): The angry citizens of [[Praetoria]] are staging a protest in Nova Praetoria. Will you join them or shut them down?
** '''Syndicate Takedown''' ([[Imperial City]]): The [[Praetorian Police Department|PPD]] has found a cell of the [[Syndicate]] in the Agilecorp building. The two forces are at a standoff at the base of the building. If you hurry you can capture one of the Syndicate's leaders.
** '''The Great Escape''' ([[Neutropolis]]): One of the [[Failed Experiments]] has remained lucid and sane, and appears to have the ability to influence other [[Ghouls]]. Informants say he is eager to aid [[the Resistance]] in its war against the regime. Will you aid him in his escape? Or will you hunt him down now that he has escaped?

*Rewards for participation in the zone events will be based on the amount of participation, and not just damage done -- (de)buffing and heals are tracked.

*[[Going Rogue]] expansion is required to enter Praetoria in order to participate in these events. [[Primal Earth|Primals]] visiting [[Praetoria]] may freely initiate and participate in these events.

===Praetorian Perpetual Contacts===

*[[Praetoria]]n players have access to [[Repeatable Missions]] content provided by either the [[Resistance]] or [[Loyalist]]s. At level 5 they automatically pop up to let you know you can contact them. They are phone-only contacts -- they don't appear in the zone.
** [[Resistance]] speak to [[Message Man]]
** [[Loyalist]]s speak to [[Clockwork A76-293]]

*[[Going Rogue]] expansion is required to enter [[Praetoria]] in order to participate in these missions.

==Mission Architect==
* '''New Maps'''
**The Tunnels and Tech map sets of [[Praetoria]] are now available in [[Mission Architect]]. They must be purchased from a [[Ticket Vendor]].
**In Unique -> Outdoor maps: Atlas Park Time Capsule (from the new Positron TF); Longbow Sea Base (Agincourt); Siren's Call; Siren's Call: Villain base; Sky Raider Base (Sharkhead); and Nemesis Shadow Shard Base.
* '''New Enemy Groups''': You can now also select the [[Praetorian Clockwork]], [[Destroyers]], [[The Resistance|Resistance]], [[Praetorian Police Department|Praetoria Police Department]], [[Seers]], [[Ghouls]], and the [[Syndicate]] as Mission Architect NPC groups. They must be purchased from a [[Ticket Vendor]].
* '''New Power Sets for Custom Critters''': [[Electric Control]] and [[Kinetic Melee]] are available power sets to give to custom [[critter]]s in your stories.

==Powers==
===Fitness Power Pool is Inherent===
The [[Fitness]] [[Power Pools|power pool]] is now an [[Inherent Powers|inherent power pool]] available to all new and existing characters starting from Level 1. Players can freely choose between any or all of the Fitness powers for available character power slots. These powers can be slotted and will accept the appropriate [[Enhancements]].

* Further clarifications were given by [[Castle (Developer)|Castle]] after the initial announcement
**Fitness Pool powers have been incorporated into Inherent powers available at Level 2 [http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?p=3244336#post3244336]
*** All characters will be granted Swift, Hurdle, Health, and Stamina.
*** Existing characters with these powers selected via [[Pool Powers]] will be able to gain the powers they have not previously taken via the normal leveling process. They will not gain access to any of the Inherent fitness powers until they Respec.
*** Upon using a [[Respec]], the [[Fitness]] [[Power Pools|pool]] will not be selectable by the character, but instead, all 4 powers will be granted as [[Inherent Powers]] at level 2. This prevents issues with lost enhancements or slot allocation errors.
**They are still auto-powers and will be always active.[http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?p=3244382#post3244382]
**The powers will work while in [[Kheldian#Dwarf|Crab]] or [[Kheldian#Nova|Squid]] form as a [[Kheldian]], which is different from the Pool versions of the powers. [http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?p=3244386#post3244386]

===Alternate Power Animations===
*The following power sets have new [[Animation_Customization|alternative animation]] choices for some of their powers in Issue 19. Select the animations and customize how a character fires off its powers at any [[Tailor]]. Each power that has an alternate animation can be separately chosen, just like colorization.

*The following power sets have new alternate animation choices for Issue 19:
** '''Ranged Sets''': [[Dark Blast]] (5 powers with alternate animations), [[Electric Blast]] (5), [[Energy Blast]] (5), [[Fire Blast]] (7), [[Radiation Blast]] (6), [[Ice Blast]] (6), [[Psychic Blast]] (7), [[Sonic Attack]] (6)
** '''Control Sets''': [[Mind Control]] (2 - Mesmerize & Terrify)
** '''Buff Sets''': [[Sonic Resonance]] (5)
** '''Blaster Manipulation Sets''': [[Mental Manipulation]] (3)
** '''Defense Sets''': [[Regeneration]] (1 - Integration)
** '''Dominator Assault Sets''': [[Psionic Assault]] (5), [[Icy Assault]] (4), [[Fiery Assault]] (5), [[Mental Manipulation]] (3), [[Energy Assault]] (3), [[Electricity Assault]] (1 - Zapp)

*Note that [[Martial Arts]] and [[Super Strength]] sets already had [[Animation_Customization|alternative animations]] prior to Issue 19

==Quality of Life==
* '''Log-out Option''': Players can log out directly to the Character Select Screen.

* '''Alienware Lighting Support''': In addition to the features introduced in I18 which changed the lighting to match the player's current alignment, in I19 more triggers will cause lighting FX. E.g., being low on HP will cause the keyboard to glow red and flash.

* '''Chat''': The ''Help Tab'' can now work again as the ''Active Tab''.
**When the [[H_(Slash_Command)|/h]] command was changed from being the ''Help Channel'' command to the ''Help Window'' command, it caused the ''Help Tab'' to no longer work as the ''Active Chat'' channel. This caused typing with the ''Help Ta''b as ''Active'' to invoke the ''Help Window'' rather than the ''Help Channel'', which then forced everyone to use [[Hc_(Slash_Command)|/hc]] as the only way to talk in the ''Help Channel''. Well, this has been fixed. The ''Help Tab'' can once again be set as ''Active'' and typing in the command line will automatically be parsed as using the ''Help Channel'' without the need to use [[Hc_(Slash_Command)|/hc]].
**[[H_(Slash_Command)|/h]] is still the [[Help (Slash Command)|/help]] command to bring up the Help Window. [[Hc_(Slash_Command)|/hc]] is still a valid way to send to the Help Channel.

* Almost everywhere INF is listed in the UI, it now has comma delimiters (1234567 now looks like 1,234,567).

* Fix: The number of maps for which a character can clear the fog of war has been increased so that any fog once cleared will remain cleared.

* Fix: Portals no longer loop their sounds while loading a mission.

* Fix: Heroes and Villains can now be on the same team, regardless of their zone. However, they must be on the same map, in order to be invited to a team.

* Fix: Praetorian Prestige bump stays with their first [[Super Group]]. Since Praetorians don't generate [[Prestige]] from levels 1 to 20, they give a 100,000 Prestige bump to a Super Group they join. Previously, when they left that Super Group, the 100,000 Prestige left with them, hurting that Super Group. And so, in Issue 19 forward, the first and only the first Super Group a Praetorian joins will get that 100,000 Prestige bump permanently. They will not lose that bump when that Praetorian leaves. And that Praetorian will not give the second or third or any other Super Group that Prestige bump. From a post by War Witch on the official forums[http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=243120].

* '''New Assets''':
** New NPC Faction: [[Imperial Defense Force]]
** New maps with the new [[Task Force]]s
** Warehouses and Praetorian Tech maps have received a cosmetic upgrade as well as a few new end rooms, and their layouts have been modified.
** Goliath-Class WarWalkers
** Designers now have an interface to create zone events without the need of hard coding (similar to what led to the Mission Architect).
== Overview ==
[[City of Heroes]] and [[City of Villains]] use a program which runs on your computer called the '''Game Client''' (and its associated game files) to generate the graphics you see and the sounds you hear. It figures out what you have clicked on and it handles the typing you do at your keyboard. The client is constantly sending information to the [[Server]] to tell it what powers you activate, what attacks you make, how you move and turn, and the messages you type to other people.

The [[Server]] is constantly sending information to your client to tell it what everyone else in your [[zone]] or [[mission]] are doing. The client shows you their actions based on that information. If something interrupts the flow of that information then everyone else will stop moving on your screen. If the flow of information is interrupted long enough then you are disconnected from the server, typically with the message: "Lost connection to [[mapserver]]".

When a new version of the game client is available it has to be downloaded to your computer before you can use it. A program called '''CohUpdater.exe''' (for NA users) or '''CohUpdater.eu.exe''' (for EU users) on the PC or '''City of Heroes.app''' on the Mac checks for and downloads new versions of the client and all its associated files.

On the PC, the game is actually played through the '''CityOfHeroes.exe''' file; if the client is up to date, the updater can be [[#PC|skipped]].

== Facts ==
* The same game client is used to play both City of Heroes and City of Villains, on both Windows and Mac OS operating systems.
* Both factions -- Heroes and Villains -- are available regardless of the background image or operating system.
* All character data is stored on the servers. You can access your account and character data from any computer that has the game client.
** One caveat: files such as [[Architect Entertainment]] save files, Character Select sorting, and Player Ratings, are stored in text files on the player's hard drive and are not accessible from other computers.
* Patches are installed prior to logon and the latest version is required to play.
* The client loads in two stages:
*# The ''Updater'', which downloads patches and checks the client for the latest version.
*# The ''Client'', which contains the game itself.
* There is no CD Key required to install the game client.
* The updater can be downloaded to install the game without the original CD/DVD's.
** Installing from CD/DVD will include an option for automatically placing a shortcut to the game in the Start Menu.
** Both PC and Mac updaters can be downloaded from the City of Heroes [ftp://client.coh.com/US/ FTP site].
** '''Note''': Installing from the updater will download the entire 2.7 GB client and may take a long while.
* Skipping the Updater is not supported by NCsoft/Paragon Studios.
* PC users can change the install directory after installation is complete (registry: HKCU/Software/Cryptic/Coh )
** Mac users can move the entire "City of Heroes.app" to another folder
* It is possible to replace almost any resource (in game map, sound file, etc.) using the data directory, '''however''' this action is not supported by NCsoft/Paragon Studios nor their EULA.
** This does not modify any NCsoft-owned resource/file. This adds a directory which the game client then interprets as replacing the resource once the game is launched. Removal of this change simply means deleting the \data directory. More info below.

== Launching the Game ==
=== PC ===
These can be run from the command prompt or entered into your shortcut. You can do the latter by right clicking on your shortcut to the updater and selecting properties then adding these to the end of the target box. So, for instance, if you want to change your game to start up with the villain skin and your target box currently contains:
"C:\Games\City Of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"
then you would change it to say:
"C:\Games\City Of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -cov

'''CohUpdater.exe''' (no switches)
*Launches the Updater which will check for updates and modify/verify files if needed. City of Heroes skin/branding.
'''CohUpdater.exe -cov'''
*Launch the Updater as above, however with with the City of Villains skin. Login screen will be City of Villains.
'''CovUpdater.exe'''
*Launch Updater, use City of Villains skin. This file is only available to those who install from a CoV CD/DVD.
'''CityOfHeroes.exe -project "coh"'''
*{{red|NOT SUPPORTED}} Launches the game client without looking for the updater, using the North American servers. If any patches have been applied since the last time you used the Updater, you ''may'' be able to login, but you will get a version conflict.
'''CityOfHeroes.exe -project "coh" -cov'''
*{{red|NOT SUPPORTED}} same as above with City of Villains skin.
'''CityOfHeroes.exe -project "eucoh"'''
*{{red|NOT SUPPORTED}} European Servers version of skipping the updater.
'''CityOfHeroes.exe -project "cohtest"'''
*{{red|NOT SUPPORTED}} Training Room version of skipping the updater.
'''CohUpdater.exe -test'''
*Launches the Updater, uses registry settings in HKCU/Software/Cryptic/Cohtest instead. Allows access to [[Training Room]].
'''CohUpdater.exe -compatiblecursors 1'''
*Uses compatible 16-color cursors to solve compatiblity issues with Windows Vista and others. Please note that this has since been integrated into an option in-game.
'''CohUpdater.exe -usetexenvcombine'''
*Enables simple rendering path, which may help fix issues with certain video cards and drivers.
'''CohUpdater.exe -renderthread 1'''
*Forces the game to run using more than one proccessor/core, rather than using only one. '''NOTE:''' Though the game does this by default now, this command is still a valid option.
'''CohUpdater.exe -renderthread 0'''
*Forces the game to run using only one processor/core, rather than using two. This may be needed to work around buggy drivers, or on Linux.
'''CohUpdater.exe -maxinactivefps 5'''
*Limits the graphic display update to 5 Frames Per Second when COH is not the foreground application. The number can be set to whatever maximum framerate is desired.
'''CohUpdater.exe -stopinactivedisplay 1'''
*Freezes the graphic display update when COH is not the foreground application. This can greatly reduce processor utilization when running multiple game clients on the same computer.
'''CohUpdater.exe -fullscreen 1'''
*Makes the game launch in full screen, regardless of what options are set in-game. To force the game ''not'' to launch in full screen, -fullscreen 0 should be used.
'''CohUpdater.exe -screen x y'''
*Makes the game launch in a window with a width equal to ''x'' and a height equal to ''y''.
'''CityOfHeroes.exe -console 1'''
*{{red|NOT SUPPORTED}} Launches the game client displaying a console with each element being loaded. Useful if your client is freezing on load, if you want time statistics for how long it takes to load, or to see other debugging info.
'''CityOfHeroes.exe -exitlaunch [command line]'''
*{{red|NOT SUPPORTED}} The game will execute the given command line on close. Used internally to launch CohUpdater for issue preloads, but can be set to execute any program when you finish playing.
'''CohUpdater.exe -mp'''
*{{red|NOT SUPPORTED}} Major Patch; predownloads the upcoming issue data if available. Normally called at the end of a play session, but you can call it manually if you know a predownload patch is ready.
'''CohUpdater.exe -uiskin 2'''
*Launch the Updater with the golden Going Rogue skin. Login screen will be feature Tyrant, Desdemona, and Maelstrom on a golden background.

=== Mac ===
:''Main Article:'' [[Mac Special Edition]]
The '''City of Heroes.app''' "file" is really just a specialized directory. Attempting any action inside this directory is {{red|NOT SUPPORTED}}.
==== Command Line on Mac ====
Launching the game with command line switches {{red|NOT SUPPORTED}}
* Assuming the game is in the /Applications directory, here are some examples that can be ran from '''Terminal.app''':
*
/Applications/City\ of\ Heroes.app/Contents/MacOS/cider --use-dos-cwd c:/coh -- C:\\coh\\cohupdater.exe -coh

*: Launch updater normally, game client will have blue CoH skin.
*
/Applications/City\ of\ Heroes.app/Contents/MacOS/cider --use-dos-cwd c:/coh -- C:\\coh\\cohupdater.exe -cov

*: Launch updater normally, game client with have red CoV skin.
*
/Applications/City\ of\ Heroes.app/Contents/MacOS/cider --use-dos-cwd c:/coh -- c:/coh/cityofheroes.exe -project coh

*: Launch game client directly (bypass updater)
* Note the extra backslashes "
\
".
*: The Terminal.app application uses bash, which uses the backslash as an escape character.
** Since a space "

" usually separates command options (switches/parameters/arguments), we use "
\
" to indicate a space in a file name.
** And since Cider is looking for a Windows(r)(c)™ directory which uses backslashes instead of forward slashes, we have to escape the backslashes as well.
**: Although it is possible to use forward slashes instead of double backslash.
* Also note the double dash "
--
"
*: The cider application can pass arguments to the application, which is any argument/option after double dash.
*:* Any arguments before the double dash are options for the cider application.
*:*:
<nowiki>cider [options] [--] program_name [arguments]</nowiki>

== Installing the Game ==
There are several methods to installing the game client, they all boil down to having an up-to-date copy of the necessary files.
;You do not need your 'CD-Key' to install the game client.
:The 'CD-Key' is for the http://plaync.com/ website for the creation/upgrade of your game account. After creating your account, the only time you need your serial code is if you lose access to your account and must provide proof of ownership. (Thus it's not a bad idea to keep your CD key handy, even though it's not necessary to ''play'' the game.)

=== Original CD/DVD ===
:''Main Article:'' [[Disc Releases]]

Install as you would any other program. Basically it will extract a copy of the game client as it was when the CD/DVD was created. You can then run the updater and patch to the current version.

* [[City of Heroes (Boxset)]] initial release [[Issue 0]]
* [[Collector's Edition (City of Heroes)]] current through [[Issue 2]]
* [[City of Villains (Boxset)]] and [[Collector's Edition (City of Villains)]] current through [[Issue 6]]
* [[Good Versus Evil Edition]] current through [[Issue 7]]
* [[Architect Edition]] current through [[Issue 14]]

=== Burned CD/DVD ===
Effectively a second copy step similar to installing the [[#Training Room|Training Room]]. One copies the entire City of Heroes directory to multiple CDs or a single DVD. Then one can copy that folder back to his/her computer or give to someone else to copy to their computer. Then create a copy of the CohUpdater.exe file, run it and point it to the folder on your HD where you copied CoH back to.

=== CohUpdater ===
You can install the Game Client starting with only the CohUpdater.exe file (or CovUpdater.exe). This file '''cannot''' be in the directory you will be installing to, as it will attempt to create a new CohUpdater.exe and will fail if it's already there.

Whenever CohUpdater is launched, it checks the registry to see if there is anything in HKCU/Software/Cryptic/Coh. If there is, then the updater proceeds normally, patches the game if needed. If there is no entry under HKCU/Software/Cryptic/Coh, then it asks the user where they would like to install the Game Client (default is C:\Program Files\City of Heroes). Once the user clicks Yes, the updater writes to HKCU/Software/Cryptic/Coh with default settings and the installdir.

=== Training Room ===
:''Main Article'': [[Training Room]]

The simplest way to install the Training Room involves creating a copy of the live game, to avoid downloading the entire client (currently 3.1GB+) all over again. Then the flag "-test" will placed on the end of the shortcut to '''CohUpdater.exe'''. Detailed instructions can be found at the [[Training Room]] article.

== Running the game from a DVD-R ==

If for some reason you would like to run the game from a DVD-R, or maybe a 4GB flash drive, this is possible. Being a read-only device, a DVD-R will only work as long as you burn the latest version with the current patches. However, if your goal is to play at a Net Cafe during a weekend away from home, this will be more than enough.

The steps are:

:*Log into the game and set all your graphics settings to low. Maybe enable windowed mode. This is to ensure the game will work properly in whichever computer you end up running it in. If you're going to be playing the game in a decent computer which can handle your current graphics settings, you can skip this step.
:*Click Start, Run, and enter '''regedit'''. Navigate the left panel to '''HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic'''. Right-click the '''Cryptic''' folder and select '''Export'''. Save as '''Settings.reg''' somewhere.
:*Burn your '''City of Heroes''' folder and the '''Settings.reg''' file to a DVD-R.
:*Take the DVD to the computer you want to play the game on. Go to the DVD drive and double-click the '''Settings.reg''' file. You only need to do this step the first time you run the game on a computer.
:*Click Start, Run, then enter '''"D:\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project coh'''. Replace D: with whatever letter the DVD drive is.
:*Play! You can change the graphics settings on the new computer to whatever you like, and they'll be saved locally.

== Registry information ==
{{divbox|red|!!! REGISTRY WARNING !!!|Be extremely careful when modifying the registry. It is Windows' roadmap. Delete the wrong thing and *poof*, you wind up not taking that left at Albaquoiky. It is recommended you backup the registry every time you go in to make an edit.}}

The game stores its configuration information in '''HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\Coh'''; even if you installed City of Villains, the key name is still Coh. If you use the Test server, its configuration is stored in '''HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\CohTest'''.

The '''Installation Directory''' parameter is useful in case you want to move the game client to another directory or partition. Enter the '''full path''' to the game's executable.

The '''VerifyOnNextUpdate''' parameter is created every time the game crashes. When the updater starts, it checks for this flag in order to decide whether to verify all files for corruption before loading the file. Thus, clearing this flag is a good way to avoid the slow verification process.

If you crash often and would like to skip the verification process every time, simply create a text file named '''NoVerify.reg''' with the following contents, and double-click it before loading the updater:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\Coh]
"VerifyOnNextUpdate"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\CohTest]
"VerifyOnNextUpdate"=dword:00000000

== Overview ==

'''Desdemona''' was originally introduced with the announcement of the second City of Heroes expansion, [[Going Rogue]]. Described in the [[Going Rogue]] [http://us.ncsoft.com/en/news/press-releases/going-rogue.html press release] as "a demon-summoning villain who has been redeemed", she is likely able to call forth demonic minions with which to attack enemies, possibly hinting at a Demon Summoning player power set.
=== History ===
From the time she was born, Eve Salvatore's path was always guided by the men in her life. Her father, Brandon Salvatore, was a strict disciplinarian. He viciously punished his daughter whenever he caught her using magic. Brandon's violent reaction to his daughter's mystical abilities came from the deep psychological wounds inflicted by his wife's death. Eve's mother, Amelia, was a powerful sorceress who had the ability to summon and control demons. Unbeknownst to her family, she also happened to be a super-powered villain, who called herself Desdemona. One night Brandon spied Amelia summoning a demon and flying off on its back to a heist. He followed her in his car and came upon her as she was battling [[Statesman]] over the streets of [[Paragon City]]. Brandon confronted Amelia and broke her concentration, causing her to lose control of the demon she was controlling. It grabbed her and in the ensuing struggle, flew headlong into the rotors of a nearby news helicopter. As the demon fled into the darkness, Statesman made a valiant attempt to save his opponent to no avail. As flaming pieces of wreckage fell around him, Brandon swore his daughter would not grow up to be like her mother.

The only thing Brandon ever told his daughter about that night was that her mother died fighting Statesman. This planted a seed of hatred toward Paragon's champion that would stay with her for most of her life. Young Eve loved her father but after being repeatedly beaten for trying to follow her destiny and honor her mother's memory, she left home with the new man in her life. Chad Ramsey was a two-bit second story thief with minor amounts of heightened agility and leaping ability who called himself Stray Cat. He made a name for himself with [[The Family|the Family]] in [[Independence Port]] and was introduced to Eve by a mutual friend as "someone you want to know". The two hit it off and Eve was thrilled when Chad had the opportunity to head out to the [[Rogue Isles]]. She saw it as a perfect opportunity to get away from her father.

For a time the lovers were very happy in their new environment. Stray Cat was on the fast track to become a made man and Eve even got in on the act. With her father's restrictions gone, she started using her magic to gain infamy in the Rogue Isles under the identity she took from her mother, Desdemona. Unfortunately her success led to another tragedy. Chad's early triumphs had faded and his Family contacts weren't calling anymore. Desdemona on the other hand had gained the attention of [[Arachnos]] with her exploits. Despite his best efforts, Stray Cat was being completely overshadowed by Desdemona in the vicious Darwinian hierarchy of the Rogue Isles. In a fit of jealousy, Chad tried to regain some of his cred by teaching his lady a lesson.and ended up dead at the hands of an immensely strong Sothoth demon. Much like her mother, Eve could summon demons and as long as she prepared a protective circle, she could control them. Desdemona didn't have full control of the demon she had rashly brought forth and after it gleefully dismembered Chad, it tried to break Eve's control entirely so it could kill her next. [[Ghost Widow]] of Arachnos came upon the scene as the demon was assaulting Eve's mind. Lord Recluse's second-in-command helped Desdemona defeat the demon and offered her a position in Arachnos. The shaken Eve quickly agreed.

With access to the knowledge of the Arachnos Mystics, Desdemona's power grew quickly. She was troubled by her near death, almost having succumbed to the demon, and so one of her first acts was to make certain that could never happen again. She performed a ritual that placed mystical tattoos on her neck. These sigils formed a circle of protection around her mind and ensured that she would always be free from the influence of her pets.

Since joining Arachnos two major events have shaped Desdemona. Early in her tutelage with Ghost Widow, Desdemona was ordered to stand before the [[Fortunata Seer|Fortunata]] called [[Kalinda]]. The seer spoke only one cryptic phrase; "This one walks between the shadow and the light." Although Eve didn't understand what it meant, it seemed to disturb her patron greatly.

The second event was no less impactful but much more dangerous. Desdemona was sent to Paragon City to investigate the rumors of a demon being used by the [[Circle of Thorns]]. She was to take control of the creature and bring it back to the Rogue Isles. She found the beast easily enough but controlling it turned out to be much more difficult. A powerful mystic had placed wards upon the demon to prevent just such an occurrence. As she began to peel back the layers of the mystical barrier, Desdemona felt a sense of deja vu wash over her. This was her mother's pet demon. In that moment of realization, she let her concentration drop and the creature attacked. It was ready to rend her limb from limb when Statesman, who was there trying to capture the demon himself, came to her rescue.

As his booming voice rung out over the din of battle; "Not this time!" he struck the demon and drew its attention away from Desdemona.

Unfortunately in doing so, Statesman left himself open to attack and the demon dealt him a near fatal blow. Using the distraction, Desdemona was able to gain the upper hand and bring the demon under her sway. There she stood, with the man responsible for her mother's death lying at her feet. With one command, her new pet could easily finish what it had started. Suddenly the opportunity she had dreamed of her whole life had arrived. Whether the greatest hero in Paragon City would live or die was her choice. She raised her hand as if to send her minion to attack... and then simply turned and walked away with her emotions in a jumble.

As Desdemona left the battle site, a chill came over her and two phrases spun to the top of her turbulent thoughts. Kalinda's eerie voice mixed with Statesman's battle shout, echoing in her mind, as she pondered what effect this decision would have on her future.
